WOODWORK DENIES MALLARDS THREE TIMES AT FERNEY PARK

A Jay Donnelly goal with just over a quarter-of-an-hour remaining saw Cliftonville salvage a point from this visit to Ferney Park.

Donnelly, only on the pitch for six minutes, pounced on a poor back pass from John Currie to slot the ball past 'keeper Stefan McCusker.

The Mallards had gone in front eight minutes into the second half when Mark Stafford headed beyond Conor Devlin's reach after a James McKenna drive had come back off the underside of the bar.

The first half was a scoreless affair and whilst the Reds enjoyed large periods of possession the best chance fell to United's Johnny Lafferty when his goalbound effort was blocked by defender Marc Smyth before being cleared for a corner.

As the game entered the closing stages Ryan Campbell came within a whisker of restoring United's lead with a thumping drive against the crossbar before he popped up at the other end to clear a Tiarnan Mulvenna effort off the line.

And Whitey Anderson's side where denied by the woodwork for a third time right at the end after Lafferty also hit the fixtures and fittings with a strong effort.
