SINGLETON BRACE SETS LURGAN BLUES UP FOR WIN
4th Apr 2015
Glenavon gave their hopes of securing a European place a huge boost with this four-goal defeat of Glentoran at Mourneview Park.
After a quiet opening the visitors came into the game with three efforts in quick succession.
Jordan Stewart saw a chance from the edge of the area parried by James McGrath before Curtis Allen headed just over and Steven Gordon also threatened only to nod a little too high from ten yards.
Despite this Glenavon moved in front against the run of play just after the half-hour mark when a Kevin Braniff corner from the left led to a goalmouth scramble before James Singleton bundled the ball over the line.
Then, right on the stroke of half-time, Singleton grabbed a second when he got on the end of a good through ball from Mark Patton to pounce from inside the box.
Glentoran might have pulled a goal back on 48 minutes after Willie Garrett delivered a cross from the right but with time on his side Steven Gordon elected to side-foot the ball wide with 'keeper McGrath rooted to the spot.
Eoin Bradley almost put the game beyond doubt on 63 minutes after Andy McGrory played the ball across the face of goal but the former Coleraine couldn't convert at the back post.
But Glenavon's third did arrive on 75 minutes courtesy of a simple Patton finish after Ciaran Martyn's effort had been saved by Elliott Morris.
Then, three minutes later, McGrory skipped past one challenge before keeping his balance to poke a fourth past Morris.
