ONE GOAL ENOUGH FOR THE GLENS
25th Apr 2015
Glentoran rounded their league campaign off with this single goal defeat of former champions Cliftonville at The Oval.
Calum Birney twice came close during the opening exchanges with a header and then the follow-up rebound blocked on the line while, at the other end, Guillaume Keke attempted to lift the ball over Elliott Morris only for the Glentoran 'keeper to save well.
James Knowles came closest to breaking the deadlock later in the first half after beating Morris only to see his effort come back off the woodwork.
Birney threatened again on 25 minutes for Glentoran with a header which Peter Cherrie did well to block at the near post.
The Irish Cup finalists did find a way through, however, right at the end of the first half when Fra McCaffrey turned the ball over the line off the underside of the bar after a corner from the left was headed back across the face of goal.
The second half did have something of an end of season feel to it although Joe Gormley might have secured a point for the outgoing champions five minutes from time only to pull his effort wide.
