Institute are staring down the barrel of relegation following this defeat to Ballinamallard United at Ferney Park.

Paul Kee's men are eight points adrift of even a play-off spot with just three games remaining.

Ben Doherty might have opened the scoring for 'Stute on ten minutes only to be denied by a superb Stefan McCusker stop.

The best chance for the Mallards after a quiet opening to the game arrived on 22 minutes when Johnny Lafferty headed the ball down for Liam Martin who couldn't connect to make it count.

But 'Stute will feel they should have led at the break when Robbie Hume threatened only to be thwarted by another good McCusker save.

At the other end moments later Liam McMenamin almost headed past visiting 'keeper Corey Wilson.

The deadlock was broken five minutes into the second half after a ball from the right was touched home by Jason McCartney from close range.

And McCartney made sure of the points for the Mallards on 72 minutes when, from a Lafferty flick, he fired a strong shot beyond Wilson.
