GLENAVON MOVE CLOSER TO EUROPE

Glenavon took another giant stride towards European football with this defeat of Linfield at the Ballymena Showgrounds.

Switched because of the unavailability of Windsor Park, the loss also closed the door on Linfield's faint title hopes.

Eoin Bradley crafted the first effort of note on 11 minutes after he collected the ball from Kevin Braniff only to see his shot blocked by 'keeper Johnny Tuffey.

At the other end a few minutes later Aaron Burns was thwarted by James McGrath from an acute angle.

However, Glenavon led at the break when, on 39 minutes, the assistant referee had adjudged that a Braniff effort had crept over the line despite Tuffey's being adamant he had scooped the ball to safety.

The Lurgan Blues continued to be the brighter of the two sides in the second half with Braniff seeing an early dipping volley well held by Tuffey while a later effort from the edge of the area went wide.

Then, with just under a quarter-of-an-hour remaining, Ciaran Martyn made it 2-0 after rising to meet a Rhys Marshall cross from the right.

Braniff could have added a third in the closing minutes when Tuffey tipped his drive over the bar.
