CLIFTONVILLE CLAIM FIRST LEAGUE WIN IN TWO MONTHS

Cliftonville picked up their first league win in two months with this defeat of Portadown at Shamrock Park.

The visitors almost moved in front on 19 minutes when at attempted Ross Redman clearance was pounced upon by Joe Gormley whose attempted lob over 'keeper David Miskelly was cleared off the line.

But within a minute Cliftonville had taken the lead after James Knowles had been brought down in the area with George McMullan stepping up to clinically convert the subsequent spot-kick.

The Ports might have levelled before the half-hour mark when Tim Mouncey crossed from the left-hand side for Gary Twigg but his point blank header was poor and barely troubled Peter Cherrie.

And Portadown squandered another opportunity on 55 minutes after Twigg flicked on Jake Richardson's cross from the right Sean Mackle but he could only fire wide with the 'keeper to beat.

But Portadown's hopes of salvaging something from the game were dealt a blow on 65 minutes following Twigg's dismissal for a late challenge on McMullan, his second booking of the game.

And so it proved when, with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining, Jude Winchester sent the ball over from the right for Gormley to turn home from six yards out.
